Valve Is Launching a VR Headset and HTC Is Not a Part of It

Valve just made a surprise reveal of a brand new VR headset via a teaser site. The headset, called the Valve Index, is a VR headset that we currently have no other information about, apart from an expected launch timeframe of May 2019.

Surprisingly, the website makes no mention of Valve's long time VR partner HTC, which means it might be a completely in-house product developed by Valve.

The headset's image looks like it will have 4 wide-angle cameras, along with inside-out tracking, and there's also an adjustment slider on top, which looks like it might let users adjust the interpupillary distance according to their own comfort and liking.

Suspense Remains on Satellite Shot Down by DRDO in India's First Anti-Satellite Missile Test

India PM Narendra Modi today announced that India had acquired anti-satellite capability by shooting down a live satellite in low earth orbit, the question is which satellite was shot down. Modi was silent on the satellite that was hit.

Officials of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) were said to be in a meeting and not available when asked to clarify the issue. However, an ISRO spokesperson told IANS: "The entire activity was that of the DRDO's and we were not involved in it."

India has a good number of earth observation and communication satellites in orbit. The space debris resulting because of India hitting a satellite in low earth orbit is expected to be not much.

Though India's anti-satellite capability was talked about earlier, it was only proved to the world after this announcement. With China shooting down its own satellite some years ago, the question of safety of India's satellites in orbit had come up for discussions.

Stadia Won't Support Offline Game Downloads

Google's Stadia game streaming platform will not support offline downloads, which automatically makes it a hard sell for casual gamers without a high-speed connection.

Speaking to GameSpot, Google VP Phil Harrison, who presented most of Stadia at the GDC keynote, said the offline game downloads are "not technically possible." He added: "It would be a compromise of our vision if we were to do that."

It also explains why Google didn't release console hardware along with the Stadia Game Controller. Without offline downloads, there's no need for dedicated hardware including internal storage as seen in the PS4 or Xbox One X.

what it says are photos of the original iPhone M68 prototype board that looks more like a traditional PC motherboard than the circuit boards typically used in smartphones.

According to the report, the board was developed by Apple as an engineering validation test (EVT) sample and is said to have been used by engineers working on the software and radio portions of the original iPhone.

As can be seen from the images, the board contains a SIM card slot, two antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and various other I/O ports and sockets, including a marked RJ11 port for landline phones. Also visible are a Samsung K4X1G153PC memory, a 620MHz ARM processor (ARM1176JZF), a Samsung NAND card (K9HBG08U1M) and other components.

Apple Watch Can Safely Detect Irregular Heartbeat

Apple Watch can detect and notify users when they experience irregular heart rhythms, finds a study demonstrating the ability of wearable technology to detect atrial fibrillation.

Researchers from the Stanford University studied whether the heart rate pulse sensor on the Apple Watch can identify atrial fibrillation, for over a year. Atrial fibrillation, a deadly and often undiagnosed condition, can lead to strokes.

The findings showed only 0.5 percent participants received irregular pulse notifications, but 84 percent of the time participants who received irregular pulse notifications were found to be in atrial fibrillation at the time of the notification and 34 percent who followed up by using an ECG patch over a week later were found to have atrial fibrillation.

NASA Creates Groundbreaking 'Hot Jupiter' Atmosphere In Its Labs

To understand conditions of exoplanets, NASA has managed to create the atmosphere of a super-hot planet outside our solar system, in its labs.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California used a high-temperature "oven" to heat a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,100 Celsius),2 about the temperature of molten lava.

The aim was to simulate conditions that might be found in atmospheres of a type of exoplanets called "hot Jupiters", NASA said. The tests, published in the Astrophysical Journal, revealed some new details about the possible atmospheres humans might encounter on those planets.

Poco F1 Lite Spotted on Geekbench with Snapdragon 660

It's just over six months since Xiaomi launched the Poco sub-brand, and the Poco F1 phone. Now there's a new Poco device coming to join the ultra-popular Snapdragon 845-powered phone.

Benchmark scores on Geekbench show the company is working on a Poco F1 Lite. The much-cheaper phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 660, and has at least 4 GB of RAM. It also runs Android 9 Pie.
We are not sure why Poco would dilute its brand and launch a mid-range phone which is likely to be exactly the same as a Redmi Note 7. It would be better to stick to what fans most associate the brand with - the best performance at the most affordable price.

It also looks like next-gen Celeron and Pentium Silver chips could come with improved Intel Gen11 integrated graphics, and will be manufactured using a 10nm process instead of 14nm. So we can expect really great performance in entry-level budget laptops early next year.

Solar Cells Seem to Work Just As Well in Near Space in 'Air Mass Zero'

Chinese researchers have found that solar cells can retain most of their power conversion efficiency in near space, opening up the possibility of using them for applications in space.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are known for their potential of achieving higher efficiency and low production costs compared to traditional silicon solar cells.

A balloon with the cells attached rose to near space at an altitude of 35 km, a region above Earth's atmosphere where there is only a trace amount of moisture and ozone. The region, considered to have "air mass zero" contains no atmospheric attenuation of solar radiation. One type of PSCs used in the study retained more than 95 per cent of its initial power conversion efficiency during the test.

Scientists Reportedly Use Quantum Computer to Reverse Time

A team of scientists from Russia, Switzerland and the US claims to have reversed the flow of time with an IBM quantum computer.Published in scientific report , the study also theorizes that an electron in empty interstellar space will spontaneously travel back into its recent past.

According to the researchers, the study done at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology explored the possibility of developing protocols for reversing the 'arrow of time' in a direct contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics, which states that the universe's disorder, or entropy, can only grow, or at best, remain constant under thermodynamic equilibrium, but never decrease over time.

You can read the entire report on Nature journal at the above link, but don't hold your breath for a time machine any time soon.

The viral #Trashtag challenge is taking over social media these days and if you are unaware of what's it all about, here's a refresher. All you need to do to participate is clean up a public space, post pictures of before and after on the social media and nominate others.

"Here is a new #challenge for you bored teens. Take a photo of an area that needs some cleaning or maintenance, then take a photo after you have done something about, and post it" on his Facebook page last week.

Indians have been associated with the challenge since the early days. Afroz Shah, a Mumbai-based lawyer, used the hashtag to encourage folks to participate in cleaning up the dirty Versova Beach, and was bestowed the award by the United Nations.
