NASA has awarded SpaceX a $69 million contract to crash a rocket into an asteroid to test whether it'll be possible for humans to avert a major crisis if an asteroid is hurtling on a collision course with Earth in the future.

The DART mission (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) uses a technique called 'Kinetic Impactor' where one or more fast moving spacecrafts are sent on an intercept course with an object heading towards Earth to try and deflect it away from its intended path.
